  • The Barber of Seville

    Glyndebourne Festival
    May 2025
    • Germán Olvera, with his warm and secure baritone, is a highly accomplished Figaro who takes the stage by storm in ‘Largo al factotum della città’, and proves thoroughly commanding throughout the evening.

    • Mexican baritone Germán Olvera, fabulous last year as Danilo in Glyndebourne’s The Merry Widow, gives us a cool and self-confident Figaro, first popping up next to the orchestra pit before working his way up to the stage. He’s a sly operator taking every opportunity to ingratiate himself into the personal business of the wealthy for his own profit. Olvera‘s rich-toned baritone is perfect for the part, and he delivers the wily character’s patter in his signature aria ‘Largo al factotum’ with a knowing élan.

    • Germán Olvera’s Figaro bounding onto the stage to take charge of proceedings with an rip-roaring “Largo al factotum”. Olvera is a Mexican version of Tigger, with irrepressible energy and charisma by the bucketload; his voice had all the agility required for the high-speed buffo patter, but could call upon baritonal heft and smooth out a lyrical line when the occasion demanded. Olvera also proved to be an accomplished guitarist, providing thrilling flamenco rasgueados as he accompanied his master’s canzone outside Rosina’s window.

    • Mexican baritone Germán Olvera is a cheeky, charming and incredibly charismatic Figaro, with boundless energy and wit to spare. His rendition of “Largo al factotum” fills every inch of the auditorium, with richness balanced with incisive tone.

  • The Merry Widow (Lehár)

    Glyndebourne Opera Festival
    Jun 2024
    • Olvera is magnificent as Danilo, witty, utterly charismatic, constantly swivelling between awareness and self-delusion. It’s a performance of great insight and finesse,

    • the strongest vocal contribution comes from Germán Olvera, playing Count Danilo, her former lover whose lingering (and reciprocated) infatuation provides the emotional fulcrum of the work

    • Danielle de Niese is … sounding great and well matched with Germán Olvera as Danilo, the best singer on stage.

    • She is paired with Germán Olvera as a fine Danilo, who imposes with his proud, bronzed baritone, allied to an unusually brooding take on the role, which he turns to great advantage by the end.

    • Danielle de Niese [as Hanna] is a consummate realisation, ideally matched by the stylish matinee-idol persona of German Olvera’s Danilo, his baritone an exceptional instrument.

  • Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Rossini)

    Nederlandse Reisopera
    Sep 2019
[translated] The strongest asset in my opinion is Germán Olvera as Figaro. The baritone convinces in both the serious, proactive side of Figaro and his renowned comic side. He melts it perfectly into one character and does everything seemingly effortlessly, including singing. In doing so, he resonates with the best of the cast.

  • Le Nozze di Figaro (Mozart)

    Staatsoper Hannover
    Jan 2022
    • Germán Olvera lotete das ganze psychologische Spektrum dieser Figur stimmlich perfekt und klangschön aus. [translated] Germán Olvera sounded out the entire psychological spectrum of this character with perfect voice and a beautiful sound.

    • The Count is interpreted by Germàn Olvera, brilliantly sung, dramatically and vocally of great class.

  • Le Nozze di Figaro (Mozart)

    Glyndebourne Festival
    May 2022
    • Mexican baritone Germán Olvera gives a wonderfully sleazy portrayal, and his outfit of Paisley patterned flares with a red velvet waistcoat and jacket was one of the best on stage.

/23 January 2025

Glyndebourne shared the line-up for their 2025 festival this week, with their first production of Parsifal headlining the announcement.
