  • Beethoven and Sibelius with the Tampere Philharmonic

    Tampere-talo, Tampere
    Sep 2023
    • Matthew Halls has already brought a new kind of lightness and sharpness to the sound of the orchestra in just a few weeks as Chief Conductor. At the same time, he demands from the orchestra a wide range of tone nuances and intensity, both at quieter and louder extremes - these traits served Beethoven's music ideally. The interpretation of En Saga had a suitable proportion of fullness and finished details. The arc of the drama was shaped by Halls as naturally as a month ago with Sibelius' Fifth. The mysteriously soaring main theme went through all the emotional states before falling into a breathless silence.

/27 July 2022

Askonas Holt is delighted to welcome British conductor Matthew Halls to its roster for general management.

The 2022/23 season sees Mathew return to the Tampere Philharmonic with Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony following his debut there earlier this year, and continue his long-standing partnerships with the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Houston Symphony and Indianapolis Symphony in symphonic and choral repertoire from J.S. Bach to Richard Strauss. Further ahead, he returns to the Wiener Symphoniker and Finnish Radio Symphony – the latter for his third project since their initial collaboration in 2019.

Matthew regularly guest conducts the Cleveland Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Iceland Symphony, Toronto Symphony and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Highlights of recent seasons include Mahler’s “Resurrection” Symphony in Toronto, the US premiere of James MacMillan’s Fourth Symphony with Pittsburgh Symphony – Matthew previously conducted the world premiere of MacMillan’s European Requiem – and his Chicago Symphony debut.

With a background in period-performance, Matthew was one of the first to guest conduct Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s Concentus Musicus Wien. His discography includes Bach's Harpsichord Concertos directed from the keyboard, the premiere recording of Handel’s Parnasso in Festa and Bach’s Easter and Ascension Oratorios. In the theatre, his operatic credits range from Handel’s Ariodante to Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.

Matthew will be managed at Askonas Holt by Antonio Orlando.
