This weekend, Christiane Karg and Fatma Said star in Gluck’s Orphée et Euridice at Teatro alla Scala.
This new production to Milan, first seen at the Royal Opera house in 2015, sees director John Fulljames collaborate with choreographer Hofesh Schecter in a sumptuous realisation of Gluck’s first great ‘reform’ opera.
As the central lovers, Christiane is joined by Juan Diego Flórez, with Fatma appearing as L’Amour. Michele Mariotti conducts the first presentation of the French-language version of Gluck’s opera at La Scala in this production which sees the orchestra take an unusual role, appearing onstage with the central characters.
Alumna of the prestigious Accademia alla Scala, Fatma made her main stage debut as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte in 2016; the same year that Christiane made her house debut as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier.
Opening night is this Saturday 24 February, with subsequent performances taking place on 28 February; 3, 6, 11, 14 and 17 March. For more information, visit the Teatro alla Scala website
