Tenor David Webb returns to Wigmore Hall this afternoon for a performance of Schubert’s Winterreise, sharing the stage with tenors Alessandro Fisher and Rupert Charlesworth, baritone Benedict Nelson and pianist Iain Burnside.
The concert is the culmination of David’s personal ‘Winter Journey’, a 500-mile cycle ride over 12 days in the darkest month of the year to raise funds for mental health charities MIND and Music Minds Matter, which began on ‘Blue Monday’ 18 January.
Talking about the project, David said:
“I wanted to show that whilst Winterreise is a story of solitude, the raw emotions that are felt by the protagonist are feelings we can all associate with, despair, depression, shame, loneliness, heartache and in some cases suicide. The point I wanted to make performing it with Iain, Alessandro, Rupert and Ben is that you don’t have to go through it alone. You can reach out and talk, you don’t have to feel embarrassed about it, you can speak to a counsellor and you’ll be stronger to get through those tough moments with love and support than you would alone.”
The performance will be live streamed on the Wigmore Hall’s YouTube Channel and available for 30 days. If you want to contribute to the David’s fundraising efforts you can do so via Just Giving by clicking here.
