Edward Gardner debuts with Bayerische Staatsoper

    /04 March 2022

This weekend Edward Gardner takes Peter Grimes to Munich to make his Bayerische Staatsoper debut with a new production by Stefan Herheim. The premiere performance will be broadcast live on radio on BR-Klassik and staatsoper.tv on 6 March. Two further performances on 10 and 13 March will be followed by two dates at the Munich Opera Festival this coming July.

This production, which also features AH artist Jennifer Johnston as Mrs Sedley, follows multiple awards for Edward’s acclaimed recording of Peter Grimes with the Bergen Philharmonic (of which he is Chief Conductor), including Gramophone’s Recording of the Year, Opera of the Year, The Times’  Record of the Year and Disc of the Month in Opera magazine.

In addition to his post in Bergen, Edward is Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic, and last month was appointed Music Director of Den Norske Opera and Ballett. He will take up the role on 1 August 2024, and until then will assume the position of Artistic Advisor. Over the next two years, Edward will conduct several opera productions in Oslo before taking charge as Music Director, including Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera and Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust in the spring of 2023.
