    Christian Elliott: 1984 – 2025

    /14 April 2025

It is with great sadness that we share news of the death of Christian Elliott. Cellist with Zehetmair Quartet since 2014, Christian was a highly versatile artist, bringing his passion, virtuosity and curiosity to the widest range of projects and musical genres. With Zehetmair Quartet, he performed at Konzerthaus Berlin, Edinburgh International Festival, Konzerthaus Wien, Palau de la Music Barcelona, Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

As principal cellist with Irish Chamber Orchestra from 2016-22, he joined them as guest director and soloist on several occasions. Concerto appearances included the premiere performance of Ian Wilson’s double concerto for cello and double bass with the orchestra, conducted by Thomas Zehetmair. He was also cellist with Phoenix Piano Trio and enjoyed collaborations with Jörg Widmann, Brett Dean, Huw Watkins, Elisabeth Leonskaja and regular duo partner, pianist Robin Green.

Christian was a keen improvisor, arranger and composer. His compositions include The Modern Prometheus, Celestial Ripples, a string sextet Amulet, commissioned by Steven Isserlis to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Prussia Cove and premiered at Wigmore Hall, and two works for solo viola; The Fish do not disturb the water and White was his Brow, both written for fellow Zehetmair Quartet member Ruth Killius. He arranged and multi-tracked himself playing many works including Schoenberg Verklärte Nacht, Faure Nocturnes and Bach Goldberg Variations.

He was passionate about integrating music into all parts of society and frequently gave workshops and performances at schools, hospitals, care homes and food banks. In 2024, he was part of a new artistic initiative with Sir James Macmillan and Cumnock Tryst, leading events for young composers and musicians in the Ayrshire area of Scotland.

A native of Ottawa, Christian studied at McGill University in Montreal and subsequently at Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, going on to make his home in Edinburgh.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

"We are heartbroken that our great cellist Christian left us. What stays with us are dear memories of being together and enjoying the love between us. Thank you Christian for your pure energy and commitment over the years, we miss you deeply."
