Toinght sees Thomas Adès conduct the Gewandhausorchester as part of his two-season residency with the ensemble which sees him appear as a conductor, pianist and composer in various concert formats. His work will include the composition of a new orchestra work which will be premiered next season.
The programme tonight includes two of his own compositions, Tower - for Frank Gehry and Märchentänze für Violine und Orchester with soloist Pekka Kuusisto, alongside works by Janaček and Sibelius, and is repeated tomorrow evening. He follows this with a recital on Sunday with Kuusisto in which the duo perform his Suite from 'The Tempest' alongside his Mazurkas for solo piano and a selection of works by Janaček. He returns later in the season as both conductor and soloist, and the orchestra will feature more of his compositions throughout the next two years.
This autumn Thomas also begins a two-season residency with the Hallé orchestra, which sees him conduct two orchestral concerts and curate a chamber programme. For the first appearance on 28 October, Thomas conducts the UK premiere of Tower, as well as the first UK concert performance of his ballet Purgatorio, alongside his Märchentänze for violin and orchestra with Anthony Marwood, which received its UK premiere at last year's BBC Proms.
