Chineke! Orchestra
Introduction
Askonas Holt are extremely proud to be the touring partner of the Chineke! Orchestra, Europe’s first majority-Black and ethnically diverse orchestra. With their motto, “Championing change and celebrating diversity in classical music”, this orchestra is a real catalyst for change, realising existing diversity targets within the industry by increasing the representation of Black and ethnically diverse musicians in British and European orchestras.
Comprised of exceptional musicians from across the continent, the players are united in their pursuit to bring classical music into line with 21st century values, levelling the playing field for all young musicians and helping to create a vibrant new generation of professional musicians of all colours.
Since their inaugural concert at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in September 2015 (where they are now a Resident Orchestra), Chineke! has captured the growing urge for social change and is gaining real momentum around the globe. Through world-class performances, the orchestra conveys the powerful message of Founder, Artistic & Executive Director, Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE: “My aim is to create a space where Black and ethnically diverse musicians can walk on stage and know that they belong, in every sense of the word. If even one Black and ethnically diverse child feels that their colour is getting in the way of their musical ambitions, then I hope to inspire them, give them a platform, and show them that music, of whatever kind, is for all people.”
Askonas Holt has worked with the orchestra since their first international performance in September 2017 at the prestigious Ghent Festival, which celebrates diversity, creativity and virtuosity.

On tour: Chineke! and Chineke! Junior orchestras in Europe

This summer, Askonas Holt is proud to once again be partnering with the Chineke! Foundation to bring both the Chineke! Orchestra and the Chineke! Junior Orchestra to Europe.
This marks the first international tour for the Junior Orchestra, which is made up of Black and ethnically diverse players aged 11-22. They will be led by 22-year-old Venezuelan conductor Glass Marcano in a programme of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.4, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Othello suite and Stewart Goodyear’s Callaloo – Caribbean Suite for Piano and Orchestra with soloist Gerard Aimontche.
The Lucerne Festival will be bookended by performances by both orchestras, with the Juniors opening the Festival this evening and the main orchestra giving the closing concert on 11 September. From Lucerne, the Juniors will head to the Berlin Konzerthaus as part of Young Euro Classic before finishing at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on 13 August.
For the Chineke! Orchestra, their three debut performances in August and September represent a welcome return to Europe. An appearance at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg on 26 August will be followed by the Helsinki Festival on 29 August before finishing in Lucerne. They will be directed by regular collaborator Kevin John Edusei, and welcome former member Sheku Kanneh-Mason for performances of Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.2 as part of a programme that also includes William Dawson’s African-American Folk Symphony.
