On Saturday 30 September, Viktoria Mullova will give the world premiere of Pascal Dusapin's At Swim-Two-Birds with cellist Matthew Barley and the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, conducted by Markus Stenz at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
Saturday's performance will be broadcast live on NPO Radio 4's Zaterdag Matinee programme, at 2.15pm CEST / 1.15pm BST.
When first approached by Viktoria and Matthew to write a piece for them, Dusapin had initially felt that he was already working on enough pieces for those particular instruments. However, they persuaded him that a double concerto for the two instruments together would be a different experience entirely. The unusual title is taken from Flann O'Brien's novel of the same name which in turn comes from Snámh dá Én (Swim-Two-Birds), a ford on the River Shannon in Ireland. Future performances are planned with at the RAI Turin Festival, with the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, Orchestra National de France, Seattle Symphony (conducted by Ludovic Morlot) and with the London Philharmonic Orchestra:
