About João
Sir Jeffrey Tate Award Winner 2024
João Barradas stands out as one of the most creative musicians on the European accordion scene, moving simultaneously between classical and improvised music. João is the first accordionist to play solo recitals in many prestigious European venues such as the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Gulbenkian Foundation and the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence.
Concerto projects have included appearances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich, the Symphoniker Hamburg, Orchestra della Toscana, Cologne Chamber Orchestra, Porto Symphony Orchestra and the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, under the direction of conductors such as Edward Gardner, Alondra de la Parra, Sylvain Cambreling, Douglas Boyd, Christoph Poppen, Joana Carneiro and Pedro Neves.
João is a former European Concert Hall Organisation Rising Star, the current Artist-in-Residence for the Casa da Musica in Porto, and the most recent recipient of the Sir Jeffrey Tate Award from Hamburg Symphoniker. Upcoming projects include a return to the Tonhalle Zurich for performances of Luís Tinoco Accordion Concerto, a return to the Bozar Brussels for a joint recital with cellist Adèle Viret, and the world premiere of his transcription of Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 for accordion with the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra.
