Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela
Askonas Holt continued their long-running partnership with El Sistema with a residency with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela at the Edinburgh International Festival. Joined by conductors Rafael Payare and Gustavo Dudamel, the SBSOV offered two electric programmes marrying the finest South American composers with Western Classical greats.

Alisa Weilerstein launched her latest project in early 2023 with FRAGMENTS, a 6-part series for solo cello that weaves together the individual movements of Bach’s Cello Suites with newly commissioned works from 27 contemporary composers. Spring 23 saw performances in Ontario, California, New York and Massachusetts.

March 2023 saw the Chineke! Orchestra embark on its first tour to North America, with performances in Ottawa, Toronto, New York, Boston, Worcester and Ann Arbor, receiving standing ovations from sold-out audiences along the way. The musicians led outreach activities with local community organisations and collaborated with young local talent, including those of ethnic minority backgrounds, in shared workshops and performances.

In our first return to Hong Kong since the pandemic, Askonas Holt was delighted to close the Tai Kwun’s Prison Yard Festival: Music from within with il pomo d’oro and countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński. Following five days of intensive rehearsal in Hong Kong, the ensemble and Orliński closed the festival with two sold-out performances on an outdoor stage in the iconic Tai Kwun Prison Yard.

Askonas Holt was delighted to continue our relationship with The Cleveland Orchestra, in what was their 20th international tour with Music Director Franz Welser-Möst. It marked the orchestra’s first visit to Europe since 2018, and its first international tour since 2019 when the ensemble travelled to Asia.
