Metropolitan Opera, New YorkApr 2025But then came the “Slander” aria, in which that teacher, Don Basilio — sung with chilling charisma by the bass Alexander Vinogradov — outlines a method for ruining a rival’s reputation. ... Vinogradov stays on as Basilio, injecting his brilliant, unsettling venom into an otherwise rosy-hued romantic comedy.
Alexander Vinogradov’s Don Basilio was conniving, … His ‘La calunnia è un venticello’ was a masterclass in comic timing.

Alexander Vinogradov was a cunning, lethal, but funny Don Basilio. His chilling “La calunnia è un venticello” left no doubt that words could be as lethal as any weapon.
- Rick Perdian, New York Classical Review
- 17 May 2025
Funnier still was Alexander Vinogradov as Don Basilio, proving that underplaying is often the key to comedy. There was nothing underplayed about his vocals during “La calunnia è un venticello,” however, as his bass-baritone thundered through Rossini’s signature crescendos.
