About Franck

Franck Ollu is a versatile conductor, widely acknowledged as an expert in the field of contemporary and French music. Recent and future highlights include the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks at Musica Viva in Munich, Budapest Festival, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Norwegian Opera, Polish National Radio Symphony and Basel Chamber orchestras. He has conducted at the Konzerthaus Stockholm in a festival focusing on the music of George Benjamin and a work by Pascal Dusapin for Radio France’s Festival Présences.

This 2023/24 season Franck conducts Dusapin’s Macbeth Underworld at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. In recent years he has conducted the world premiere of Thierry Escaich’s Shirine at the Lyon Opera as well as a new production of Wolfgang Rihm’s Jakob Lenz in Mannheim. Other recent operatic engagements include new productions of Dallapiccola’s Il Prigioniero and Rihm’s Das Gehege at La Monnaie and revivals of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande at Strasbourg Opera and Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg in Lille. In 2019 he returned to the Salzburg Festival for a performance of Medeamaterial by Dusapin.

His particularly close relationship with Ensemble Modern has led to numerous opera performances, including at the Salzburg Festival and of Heiner Goebbels’ Landschaft mit entfernen Verwanten at the Bockenheimer Depot in Frankfurt and Saed Haddad’s A Wintery Spring at Frankfurt Opera. They have also collaborated in orchestral repertoire, and recently Franck conducted concerts in Cologne and Frankfurt to celebrate their 40th anniversary year.

23/24 Season Highlights

Oct 2023 - Oct 2023
Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana, Slovenia
Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra Franck Ollu, conductor Jeroen Berwaerts, trumpet Programme: John Adams - Tromba lontana Nina Šenk - A moment of Reflection (for trumpet and chamber orchestra) Charles Ives - The Unanswered Question Vito Žuraj - Le fou triste (for trumpet and string orchestra) Johann Nepomuk Hummel - Trumpet Concerto in E major Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92 One of the greatest conductors of today, Franck Ollu, invites trumpeter Jeroen Berwaerts to perform something special: “Let’s take a stroll into the past! Let’s start in America with the adorably filmic John Adams, meet Charles Ives on the way to old times, and arrive at the famous classical Trumpet Concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. I would be honoured if your excellent composers Nina Šenk and Vito Žuraj would write two short connecting pieces as a transition from Adams’s Tromba lontana to Ives’s The Unanswered Question, and from there to Hummel’s Concerto. May it be a pleasant journey for everyone present in the concert hall!”
Oct 2023 - Nov 2023
Opéra Comique, Paris, France
Opera in eight chapters. Libretto by Frédéric Boyer, based on "Macbeth" by Shakespeare created at the Théâtre Royal De La Monnaie (Brussels) on 20th September 2019. Co-commissioned with the Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie, "Macbeth Underworld" was scheduled to be performed at the Opéra Comique in spring 2020. The health crisis postponed this eagerly awaited première to 2023. Thomas Jolly invents an outer-world scenic space and Franck Ollu, fine connoisseur of Pascal Dusapin’s work, unfolds his acoustic universe. Evil incarnate, the Shakespearian couple lures us into the darkest corners of the human soul. Pascal Dusapin, one of our great contemporary opera composers, created the score on a text by Frédéric Boyer, itself based on the original theatre play.
