About Giovanni

Described as a ‘revelation’ and ‘vocally flawless’, Giovanni Sala has established himself as one of the leading tenors of his generation, with regular engagements in the top theatres worldwide.

In the 2025/26 season, Sala will make his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in the role of Alfredo La traviata. He returns to the Teatro alla Scala to sing Ferrando in a new production of Così fan tutte and to the Teatro Regio di Torino to sing Macduff Macbeth.

Recent highlights include Alfredo La Traviata at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino; Tamino Die Zauberflöte and Don Ottavio Don Giovanni at the Bayerische Staatsoper; Tito La Clemenza di Tito at the Edinburgh International Festival and for Monte Carlo Opera; L’Opera Seria by F.L.Gassmann at the Teatro alla Scala; and a tour of Messa da Requiem conducted by Maestro Riccardo Muti.

Other notable engagements include Don Ottavio Don Giovanni at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Teatro Massimo di Palermo; Nicias in a new production of Massenet’s Thaïs and Prunier La Rondine at the Teatro alla Scala; Rodolfo La bohème at Bayerische Staatsoper; Alfredo La Traviata at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma; and Fenton Falstaff at the Ravenna Festival with Riccardo Muti.

In equal demand for concert work, Giovanni has appeared in Haydn’s Paukenmesse with Pablo Heras-Casado at the Teatro alla Scala and in Beethoven's Missa Solemnis under the baton of Riccardo Muti with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Sir John Eliot Gardiner at the BBC Proms. He has also appeared in concert alongside Sonya Yoncheva, and in Mozart’s Requiem at the Festival l’Offrande Musicale in Toulouse.

Giovanni was born in Lecco and studied at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Como with Fiorenza Cedolins. He pursued his musical studies further at the Accademia Teatro alla Scala in Milan, working with Luciana d’Intino and Marcelo Álvarez. Giovanni won numerous awards, among them the Second Prize at the Queen Sonja Competition (2017) and the AsLiCo Competition (2014).
