Winner: 2023 Herbert von Karajan Prize

Oscar Jockel served as Assistant Conductor with the Berliner Philharmoniker. He secured a two-year position as a conducting fellow at the Karajan Academy, having been awarded the ‘Siemens Conductors Scholarship’ after winning the conducting competition at the Philharmonie Berlin in 2021. In addition to assisting Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko in both concert and opera performances, Oscar conducted independent concert projects in collaboration with the academy members of the Berliner Philharmoniker. 2021 also saw Oscar appointed Assistant Conductor at the Philharmonie de Paris with the Ensemble intercontemporain and Music Director Matthias Pintscher.

In the 2024/25 season, he followed invitations from the Semperoper Dresden with the Sächsische Staatskapelle, the Munich Philharmonic at the Isarphilharmonie, the Berlin Philharmonie with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Konzerthaus with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Halle Handel Festival with the Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, and the Ljubljana Radio Orchestra. He also toured with the Camerata Salzburg and pianist Mao Fujita in Salzburg, Munich, and Vienna, and returned to the Gewandhaus with the Mendelssohn Orchestra Academy, the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, and the Tonkünstler Orchestra Vienna.

For his work as a composer and conductor, Oscar received the Herbert von Karajan Prize, which was presented to him at the 2023 Salzburg Easter Festival. His recent and current commissions include works for the Philharmonie Berlin, the Wiener Musikverein, the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, the Bruckner Orchester Linz, the Camerata Salzburg, the Quatuor Diotima (Brucknerhaus Linz), a music theatre work and a collaboration with Westbam (Salzburg Easter Festival and the Mendelssohn-Orchesterakademie of the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig). In 2020/21, he was appointed the first Composer in Residence at the Brucknerhaus Linz.

As a conductor or conducting assistant under Sir Simon Rattle, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Reinhard Goebel or Hartmut Haenchen, Oscar has worked with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Philharmonia Orchestra, Klangforum Wien, Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra.
