Stefan Dohr is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost horn players. Principal Horn of the Berliner Philharmoniker since 1993, he has established an international career as a soloist and chamber musician, combining exceptional technical versatility with a musical curiosity that has inspired some of today’s leading composers to expand the repertoire for his instrument.

Highlights of the 2026/27 season include appearances with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, among others.

As a soloist, Stefan has appeared with orchestras including the Los Angeles and Oslo Philharmonics, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He has collaborated with conductors including Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Simon Rattle, Bernard Haitink and Christian Thielemann.

A passionate advocate for new music, Stefan has inspired numerous composers to write for him, resulting in significant additions to the horn repertoire. These include works by Toshio Hosokawa, Wolfgang Rihm, Hans Abrahamsen, Jörg Widmann and, most recently, Esa-Pekka Salonen, whose new Horn Concerto Stefan premiered with the Orchestre de Paris in 2025 at the Lucerne Festival.

Stefan is also a sought-after chamber musician and has performed with artists including Ian Bostridge, Maurizio Pollini, Kirill Gerstein and Carolin Widmann. He is a member of Ensemble Wien-Berlin and the Philharmonic Octet Berlin.

Stefan studied in Essen and Cologne and held principal horn positions in Frankfurt, Nice and at the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin before joining the Berliner Philharmoniker. Alongside his performing career, he gives masterclasses internationally and currently holds a Guest Professorship at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
