About Toby

Toby Spence has sung at the Royal Opera House, The Metropolitan Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, Opéra national de Paris, Bayerische Staatsoper, English National Opera, Teatro Real, Madrid, the Liceu, Barcelona, San Francisco Opera, Theater an der Wien, and the Hamburgische Staatsoper, as well as at the Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence and Edinburgh festivals.

Recent operatic engagements include his critically acclaimed role debuts as Erik (Der Fliegende Holländer) for Teatro la Fenice, Alonso (The Tempest) for Teatro alla Scala and Wiener Staatsoper, the title role in Parsifal for Opera North, and Alwa (Lulu) for La Monnaie.

Plans for the 2024/25 season include a return to the role of Erik (Der Fliegende Holländer) for the Irish National Opera, as well as performances of Der Mönch (Die Jakobsleiter) with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra.

On the concert platform, Toby will perform Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the Royal Albert Hall, Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with Ben Goldscheider and Fantasia Orchestra, and Handel's Messiah with the Hallé Orchestra.

    • Appelé à remplacer au pied levé Attala Ayan, le ténor anglais Toby Spence investit le personnage d’Idoménée avec humanité, et traduit parfaitement son dilemme vis-à-vis de son fils Idamante. Called to replace Attala Ayan at short notice, the English tenor Toby Spence invests the character of Idomeneus with humanity, and perfectly conveys his dilemma vis-à-vis his son Idamante.

    • Toby Spence, remplace Atalla Ayan dans le rôle-titre, ce qu'il ne laisse nullement paraître. La projection vocale soutient un italien modèle. Cette aisance lui permet de se concentrer sur l'incarnation de son personnage hanté, ainsi que ses variations de volume et un vibrato savamment contrôlés. Les vocalises sont aisées et les aigus sont atteints... Toby Spence , replaces Atalla Ayan in the title role, which he in no way lets appear. The vocal projection supports an Italian model.
