Valeriy Sokolov: Bartok’s 2nd Violin Concerto // Stanislav Kochanovsky & the NDR Hannover RPH
(Sokolov) revelled in the verbunkos dance rhythms, and with his bright, steel-edged tone savoured the virtuosity of the first movement cadenza, consisting almost entirely of double stops and chords, as well as the helter-skelter scales in the Finale. There was a soft and dreamy opening to the central Andante tranquillo, though this example of Bartók’s night music demonstrated little terror lurking in the shadows. The Ukrainian virtuoso violinist Valeriy Sokolov performs Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in the AVROTROS Friday Concert. In this work, according to one 19th century critic, the violin was ‘scourged, demolished and beaten black and blue’. Tchaikovsky was able to quote the entire review from memory for the rest of his life. PlayingValeriy Sokolov performs Khachaturian Violin Concerto in D minor
Valeriy Sokolov gives a mesmerising performance of Khachaturian Violin Concerto in D minor with Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale RAI, conducted by Juraj Valčuha. Recorded 20/01/22 at the Auditorium RAI Turin. …Sokolov’s interpretation is superb in every respect, the intonation is excellent, supported by a clear sound, pungent when necessary and theatrical, all characteristics necessary for the rendering of Khachaturian’s histrionic writing, extrovert even in the most meditative moments. The variety of the violinist’s phrasing reverberates in a natural kaleidoscope of facets in the two souls that alternate in the large initial Allegro con fermezza, from the wild dancing accents of the first theme to the heartfelt lyricism of the opposing idea… Read the full review on L’Ape Musicale here.
