Eugene Onegin (title role)
The Grange FestvialJun 2026 - Jul 2026Looming over her with supreme condescension, Chizhov’s lanky Onegin is equally compelling as he dismisses her advances with contempt he will later regret.

The manner in which Chizhov, with his strong and aesthetically pleasing baritone, carried himself as Onegin suggested that, while on the surface he appeared quite awkward, he had a certain presence that could draw people in to a dangerous degree.

No less credible is Vladislav Chizhov’s aloof and initially scornful Onegin (all good looks and velvet baritone) whose sneering “do try and learn some self-control” belittles Tatyana’s adolescent ardour. Indifferent to her feelings, his dalliance with the not so innocent Olga prompts the jealous Lensky into an ill-considered duel. Only later does Onegin regret his insensitivity, captured well by Chizhov in his awkwardness when meeting the now married Tatyana, who he can barely look at.

Iolanta
[Translated] The other great bass clef role is Vaudémont's companion, Robert, here played by the young Russian baritone Vladislav Chizhov.
