il Pomo d'Oro
Introduction
Founded in 2012, il Pomo d’Oro has established itself as an ensemble of outstanding quality in the field of historically informed performance. The ensemble is characterized by an authentic, dynamic interpretation of operas and instrumental works from the Baroque and Classical period. In 2022, il Pomo d’Oro celebrated 10 years of intense concert activity worldwide and an impressive list of 35 recordings, many of them award winning.
Since 2016 Maxim Emelyanychev has been Chief Conductor of il Pomo d’Oro. The ensemble has also worked with conductors Riccardo Minasi, Francesco Corti, Stefano Montanari, George Petrou and Enrico Onofri. Violinist Zefira Valova leads the orchestra in various projects.
Since they first collaborated in 2016, Askonas Holt has arranged over 35 tours with il Pomo d’Oro across Europe, North America, South America and Asia with some of the world’s leading singers and instrumentalists, including Joyce DiDonato, Jakub Józef Orliński, Franco Fagioli, Alina Ibragimova and Edgar Moreau.
The discography of il Pomo d’Oro includes several opera recordings: Händel’s Theodora, Agrippina, Tamerlano, Partenope and Ottone, Vinci’s Catone in Utica, Recitals with Joyce DiDonato, Ann Hallenberg, Jakub Józef Orliński, Max Emanuel Cencic and Franco Fagioli. Among the instrumental albums the recordings of Haydn’s violin and harpsichord concertos as well as a cello album with Edgar Moreau received Echo Klassik Awards in 2016. With Maxim Ememlyanychev, the ensemble will release the complete Mozart Symphonies for the 21st Century over 6 discs. The first volume, “The Beginning and the End”, was released in February 2023.
il Pomo d’Oro is official ambassador of El Sistema Greece, a humanitarian project to provide free musical education to children in Greek refugee camps.
The ‘il Pomo d’Oro Academy’ was launched online during the first wave of the Covid 19 pandemic, offering free music lessons to music students worldwide. The Academy is now collaborating with El Sistema Venezuela, offering online masterclasses in Baroque music interpretation in cooperation with the “Inocente Carreño Itinerant Conservatory” in Caracas to the Baroque music ensembles of the El Sistema movement.
The ‘il Pomo d’Oro Academy’ is a longterm project that will start in their new residence, the monastery in Monte San Savino, Tuscany. Currently under construction, the monastery will be transformed into a state-of-the-art rehearsal and recording room, which can also serve as a small but very atmospheric concert venue. It will host masterclasses, workshops and educational programs for children.

ON TOUR: EDEN returns to North America

This week sees Joyce DiDonato and il Pomo d’Oro return to North America with their critically-acclaimed global production, EDEN. Hailed as “grippingly immediate, fitfully inspiring” by The New York Times, EDEN melds music, movement and theatre, and celebrates four centuries of music exploring the human connection to the Earth. The programme echoes that of the GRAMMY-nominated album released last year on Erato.
This leg of the tour kicks off this evening in La Jolla at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in what will be a debut for both orchestra and conductor Zefira Valova. From San Diego they travel up the coast for performances at Stanford, Berkeley and Santa Barbara before heading northeast to Montreal and Québec City. The final performance takes place at Princeton University on 1 February.
Alongside the performances, in each city Joyce leads workshops with local children’s choirs as part of EDEN Engagement, which has to date reached more than 735 students across 39 workshops. Partnering with the International Teaching Association Collaborative (ITAC), the educational programme aims to prove that touring can be a legitimate and powerful tool for change in communities.
Joyce reunites with il Pomo d’Oro in June to bring EDEN back to Europe for 11 performances across Greece, Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Latvia and Italy.
