ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien

Introduction

The RSO Vienna stands for musical diversity at the highest level – from classical and modern to contemporary music. Every year, the orchestra stages around twelve world premieres and first performances. Marin Alsop has been the principal conductor since 2019. Markus Poschner will take over this position from the 2026/27 season.

The concerts are usually broadcast live on Ö1 and are then available worldwide as a stream on sound.orf.at for 30 days. With TV presence on ORF 2 and ORF III, collaboration with FM4 and around 700 supporters in the ‘Friends of the RSO’ association, the orchestra is continuously expanding its reach and community.

In Vienna, the RSO performs two subscription cycles at the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus, as well as at festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, Wien Modern and steirischer herbst. International tours have taken the orchestra to Japan, China, South America and renowned venues such as the Elbphilharmonie, the Philharmonie de Paris and the BBC Proms.

Since 2007, the RSO has also been the opera orchestra at the MusikTheater an der Wien. In the field of film music, it has contributed to ‘Die Vermessung der Welt’, ‘Kater’ and “Moonbound”, among others, and has been an integral part of the ‘Hollywood in Vienna’ gala.

Numerous renowned conductors and soloists have worked with the orchestra, including Kirill Petrenko, Simone Young, Daniil Trifonov, Hilary Hahn and Anna Netrebko.

The RSO documents its artistic breadth with award-winning CD recordings (including ICMA, Diapason d'Or, Opus Klassik) and comprehensive editions – for example, on Wellesz, Cerha and, most recenly, Bruckner.

Its own education programme includes workshops, school projects and the RSO Orchestra Academy. Since 1969, the orchestra has shaped Austrian musical life with its spirit of innovation and artistic excellence – in concert halls, on the radio, on recordings and online.
