About Luis
Grand Prix winner of the Rotterdam International Conducting Competition 2025 Dudamel Fellow of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the 2024/25 season
Luis Castillo-Briceño was appointed a Dudamel Fellow of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the 2024/25 season working alongside Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and visiting artists and conductors. He also worked with students in key education programmes and conducted in their Symphony for Youth and Symphonies for Schools series.
In 2023/24 he was Conducting Fellow with the London Philharmonic Orchestra mentored by Principal Conductor Edward Gardner. He made his UK debut conducting the LPO at the Brighton Dome in November 2023 and performed several other concerts with the orchestra during the season.
In 2024/25 Luis made his conducting debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Sinfonieorchester St Gallen and Philharmonie Luxembourg. He continued his relationship with the LPO assisting and conducting on their tour of the United States in October 2024.
In June 2025, Luis was named joint-winner of the Grand Prix at the Rotterdam International Conducting Competition. The jury also awarded Luis the Classical, Proms and Symphonic prizes.
A semi-finalist of the German Conducting Award 2023 – which saw him conduct the WDR Sinfonieorchester and the Gürzenich-OrchesterKöln – Luis has been an Equilibrium Young Artist since 2020, receiving mentoring from Barbara Hannigan.
Further highlights in 2025 include a return to the Philharmonie Luxembourg in July and his Chinese debut in December.
Born in Costa Rica, Luis speaks fluent English, Spanish, French and German. A highly accomplished violinist, flutist and pianist/organist, Luis is currently pursuing a Specialized Masters in orchestral conducting at the ZHdK (Zurich) with Prof. Christoph-Mathias Mueller and Prof. Johannes Schlaefli.
