General Music Director: Staatsoper Hannover

Stephan Zilias is General Music Director of Staatsoper Hannover. Holding the position since 2020 he was recently invited to extend his contract until August 2026. His successful tenure has seen Stephan conduct titles including Mefistofele, Rusalka, La Juive, Carmen, Otello, Lear and Parsifal, among others. The theatre won Best Opera House at the 2020 Oper! Awards and has received multiple nominations by Opernwelt Magazine, including Best Opera House and Rediscovery of the Year for Marschner's Vampyr.

The 2024/25 season sees Stephan conduct performances of Salome, Rosenkavalier, Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Martinů’s The Greek Passion in Hannover. Elsewhere, he makes his Opera Vlaanderen debut leading a production of Der Freischütz with performances in Ghent and Antwerp. In 2023, Stephan made debuts with Theater an der Wien in a production of Knussen’s Where the Wild Things Are and Savonlinna Opera Festival with a production of Lohengrin.

Stephan maintains a close relationship with Deutsche Oper Berlin since stepping down as Kapellmeister and assistant to Donald Runnicles in 2020 and returns this season for performances of Fidelio and Langgaard’s Antikrist.

On the symphonic stage, Stephan continues to curate a successful concert series in Hannover and makes his debut with NDR Radiophilharmonie for the 2024 Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition. Other recent highlights include debuts with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Staatstheater Nuernberg and Teatro Lirico di Cagliari.

    • However, the discovery of the evening takes place in the pit of the Staatsoper: GMD Stephan Zilias leads the Niedersächsisches Staatsorchester Hannover through the score with virility, transparency and a slender sound. It shimmers, speaks, murmurs and whispers in a rarely heard way in all motivic facets. Above all, however, the waltz interludes and melodies are all the more impressive in this interpretation, especially in their actual function of a caricaturing, tongue-in-cheek ambiguity. A marvellous interpretation!

    • First and foremost, there is the excellent Lower Saxony State Orchestra Hanover with many outstanding solos in all instrumental groups. GMD Stephan Zilias had the large apparatus under control with precise, stimulating gestures. He found the right mixture of whirring turbulence and intense calm phases in which the voices could develop.

    • Conductor Stephan Zilias has chosen to perform the work in its original version in Hanover. He doesn't level anything out, instead emphasizing the collage-like structure of the music, the rhythmic, modern, short-winded, harsh, and archaic elements of Martinu's music, the filigree and lyrical, as well as the monumental and pathetic. A haunting interpretation that the Lower Saxony State Orchestra Hanover realizes flawlessly and with magnificent sound. Music that touches and moves you.

    • The Lower Saxony State Orchestra Hanover, under its chief conductor Stephan Zilias, brings Martinú's musical style to life. The extremely diverse styles and elements from opera, church music, folk music, spoken texts, and recitatives, with all their rapid changes and demanding performances, were convincingly mastered.

    • The Hanover production was impressive overall, thanks in no small part to the musical realization by the Lower Saxony State Orchestra, which excelled in all instrumental groups. Music Director Stephan Zilias conducted the orchestra with precise, inspiring direction and masterfully held the large ensemble together.

    • By completely unravelling the opera and radically recomposing it, the director sets up a challenging adaptation, in which the fragmented approach to both the content and the music invites us to rediscover this masterpiece with fresh eyes and vision. The fact that conductor Stephan Zilias is prepared to join in this procedure … certainly deserves praise. For a young conductor, his choices are exceptionally daring. Instead of a drawn-out, let's say long-winded experience, this 'Der Freischütz' becomes meaningful from A to Z. Zilias already makes himself heard in the overture with some hyperbolic interventions in terms of tempo, phrasing and dynamics, which he continues in his entire performance.

    • In the German national operas, the music is usually at the service of the dramatic plot. Marthaler and conductor Stephan Zilias embrace this tradition and continue it in their interpretation: with a sense of exaggeration, without lapsing into caricature. Lazily drawn-out passages alternate with voluptuous bombast, and miserably long silences help create the embarrassing atmosphere that hangs over the performance… the orchestra guides the viewer through the story with a lot of joie de vivre.

    • a Freischütz that is both scathing and brilliant, a thousand miles from everything we thought we knew about this masterpiece by Carl Maria von Weber. By keeping a good distance from first-degree folklorism, the show erases the boundaries between theatre and opera by adopting a deliberately comic, offbeat or downright acerbic tone … all under the vigorous direction of Stephan Zilias at the head of the Orchestra and Chorus of the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. The musical direction of Stephan Zilias, current Generalmusikdirektor at the Hanover Staatsoper, brings the orchestra's sounds to life with beautiful elegance in the acoustics of the Ghent Opera, which are both very quiet and very precise. The gesture calls for small harmony inflections that closely follow the singing and freely dialogue with very dense strings. Everything can be heard, from the conductor's breathing to the changes in bowing...

    • Conductor Stephen Zilias oversees a versatile performance in the pit with the house orchestra…there is a notable depth and range of expression from the ensemble with strings that are often lucid but firmly grounded by the cellos and basses, and appropriately horns are to the fore.

    • Stephan Zilias, deserves credit for maintaining the score's coherence, which he does brilliantly, achieving a rich and colorful sound from the orchestra, and a fullness that never overdoes its power.

    • Stephan Zilias conducts a quality orchestra, even vocally, with the musicians singing, at one point, the hunters' chorus, one of the liberties taken by the director.

    • The fact that everyone, including the stage music, came together throughout the evening is thanks to the coordination of Hanover's General Music Director Stephan Zilias, who impressed with his very fine conducting.

    • Wagner's music is enchanting, full of symbolism and intense emotion. At many points you feel like crying or laughing. The Savonlinna Opera Festival Orchestra, composed of Finland's top musicians, led by conductor Stephan Zilias, conveys these emotional avalanches excellently.

    • Lohengrin is an experience of a lifetime because the music is good, and it is performed with care. The conductor Stephan Zilias and the choirmaster Jan Schweiger have done - and are doing - an excellent job. The dynamics of the orchestra and choir are excellent. Despite the distances, Wagner's longitudinal flow of music keeps the whole working together, and of course, under Zilias' clear direction, nothing less can be expected.

    • On the podium of the Savonlinna Opera Festival, conductor Stephan Zilias – a career mainly in the German area – confidently guided the Finnish instrumentalists, drawing clear and precise sounds.

    • The Vienna Symphony Orchestra played through the suggestive, demanding, accompanying score in the best sense of the word – a compendium of everything good in the 20th century – which conductor Stephan Zilias handled technically well and filled with warmth and life.

    • After all, there is a lot on offer here, with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, a large orchestra including extensive percussion in the pit, which clearly chisels out the score under the conductor Stephan Zilias, but realizes it with a lot of forward momentum.

    • Eine Aufführung dieses Stückes ist vielleicht die aufregendste Expedition, die sich in einem Opernhaus unternehmen lässt (…) Jetzt hat die Staatsoper alle Kräfte gebündelt und eine überwältigende Produktion herausgebracht. (...) Das Staatsorchester macht unter Leitung von Stephan Zilias deutlich, dass Wagners rauschhafte Musik in Parsifal so konzentriert ist wie in keinem anderen seiner Werke: Es ist großartig, wie die Musikerinnen und Musiker sehr lange Spannungsbögen aufbauen, die in echten Höhepunkten kulminieren.

    • Das Niedersächsische Staatsorchester Hannover beweist parallel, dass es eine ausgeprägte Wagner-Kompetenz besitzt. Die Holzbläserfarben sind fein abgemischt, die Streicher glühen edel ausgehört – da spürt man musikalisch eine Kultur der Achtsamkeit und der utopischen Möglichkeiten, die von der Szene bewusst nicht bedient werden, aber gerade so ein anregendes Spannungsfeld zwischen dem brutalen Realitätsbezug des Auges und dem zarten Idealitäts- und Emotionalitätspotenzial des Ohres bilden.

    • Nach der Premiere gibt es satten, minutenlangen Applaus (und ein paar Buhs) für eine Aufführung in Bayreuth-Qualität.

    • Stephan Zilias läßt das Gewandhausorchester schier aufleuchten, vor allem in der Ouvertüre und im Vorspiel zum zweiten Akten hört man Verzauberndes. Er sorgt aber auch für unglaubliche Durchhörbarkeit des Orchestersatzes, was ein Grund der beachtlichen Textverständlichkeit ist. Lediglich kleine Pausen zerreissen manchmal den Konversationsfluß auf der Bühne.

    • Nielsen, 1865 geboren, gehört einer Generation an, die wie auch Richard Strauß, Jean Sibelius und vor allem Gustav Mahler eine immer wieder gebrochene spätromantische Musiksprache zum Klingen bringt, und in der das Gewandhausorchester unter Stephan Zilias nun mit viel Delikatesse schwelgt: Volksliedhaftes, fast zum Mitsingen, neben aufgerauten Klangfarben. Doch auch an Zitate von Richard Wagners "Meistersinger" und Giuseppe Verdis "Falstaff" wird man erinnert.

    • Stephan Zilias beginnt ‚voll normal‘. Er weiß, dass man die musikalischen Scharniere der Schauerromantik manchmal verstecken muss, um sie desto wirkungsvoller einsetzen zu können. Fahle Streicher, bizarre Klarinetten-Töne und Unebenheiten schleichen sich in die Ouvertüre – bewusst beiläufig und deshalb erst recht unüberhörbar.

    • Gerettet wird das Ganze von Stephan Zilias, der mit dem Niedersächsischen Staatsorchester bei den stets wechselnden Himmels- und Höllenmelodien reinstes romantisches Musiktheater zum Vorschein bringt.

    • Dirgent Stefan Zilias holt mit dem gut aufgelegten Staatsorchester dabei ein Maximum an Dramatik heraus.

    • Marschners Tonsprache war zwar keineswegs der eines Richard Wagner zu vergleichen, und Dirigent Stephan Zilias versuchte auch gar nicht, sie dazu hochzustilisieren, aber er lotete die hohe Dramatik schon im Vorspiel aus, einer Art musikalischem Wechselbad der Gefühle zwischen inniger Empfindung und krasser Urgewalt.

    • Stephan Zilias, Generalmusikdirektor in Hannover, dirigiert das Werk leuchtend und doch nicht überbordend, eher filigran sängerfreundlich, kein leichtes Unterfangen bei den wagnerianischen Dezibeldimensionen der Partitur.

    • Nach der Premiere der selten aufgeführten "Kirchenoper" gab es am Sonntagabend viel Beifall und Bravo-Rufe.

    • Dirigent Stephan Zilias, sonst Generalmusikdirektor der Staatsoper Hannover, zaubert aus Langgaards opulenter Partitur ein filigranes, dann wieder kraftvoll auftrumpfendes Klangspektakel. Vor allem aber kann er zeigen, dass diese Musik nicht einfach nur von virtuosem Eklektizismus geprägt ist, sondern eine ganz eigene Tonsprache ausbildet.

    • Stephan Zilias zaubert im Graben so fein, dass Vergleiche mit Richard Strauss, Franz Schreker, Alexander von Zemlinsky und in einigen hochdramatischen Momenten auch mit Richard Wagner nicht zu hoch greifen. Wenn die Morgenglocken schlagen, ist auch italienische Verismo-Atmosphäre nicht fern.

    • The end of the Leonore Overture No. 3 under Zilias’ leadership became a lively, concise affair with a particularly brilliant final section. As an encore, the new General Music Director did not serve up a ‘well-known hit’ but again Ligeti, albeit an easily digestible work… Humour, multifacetedness and precision: if Zilias maintains this mix, Hannover can be happy. Die Leonoren-Ouvertüre Nr. 3 wurde zum Abschluss unter Zilias' Stabführung zu einer lebendigen, bündigen Angelegenheit mit einem besonders fulminanten Schlussteil. Und als Zugabe servierte der neue Generalmusikdirektor keinen bekannten Hit, sondern noch einmal Ligeti, allerdings mit einem leichter verdaulichen Frühwerk: 'Es ist auch nur kurz', lautet die Ankündigung. 'Gleich haben Sie's geschafft.' Humor, Facettenreichtum und Präzision: Sollte Zilias dieses Mischung aufrechterhalten, kann Hannover sich freuen.
