Headshot for Sue Spence

Suzanne was born in Wales and studied Music at the University of Oxford, specialising in German Romanticism and C19th song. Following a year in Germany as an au pair and ballet pianist, she began her career in London at Rhinegold Publishing in advertising sales and marketing. She went on to work in the concerts department at the Philharmonia Orchestra and as A&R Manager at BMG Classics before joining Lies Askonas in 1996, ahead of the merger of the company with Harold Holt. She has been a Director at Askonas Holt since 2006 and jointly heads the singers’ division. She is often invited to advise students at the UK conservatories and to adjudicate competitions including the Guildhall Gold Medal, the Royal Over-Seas League Gold Medal, the Hurn Court Opera competition, the Lies Askonas competition, the London Handel competition 2025, the Marie Kraja International Singing competition, Albania, and was an RPS Awards panellist in 2025. She is Chair of Grasmere Song. A lover of great architecture, she lives in the Barbican and balances out the high art by devouring box sets and rubbish TV.
